As you’ve probably seen me post on social media lately, I’m hungry. Ha. Just kidding. I’ve spent the month of January tackling my second attempt at the Whole 30! I tried to do it abut a year ago and only made it five days. This time I am determined to make it the entire 30 days. My primary goal in doing the Whole30 was to find easy, flavorful recipes that our whole family would love. It’s been quite an adjustment for Noah, who is a Goldfish, cookie, and fruit snack addict. (He and I definitely share a love of homemade chocolate chip cookies)! ? However, I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made and its kept me motivated to continue the hunt for more easy, healthy, delicious recipes! (I mean, he ate half a bag of steamed broccoli the other night – that’s a parenting win if I ever did see one)! I didn’t want to restrict Noah to a Whole30 diet (just something I wasn’t personally comfortable with), so I would say that the most difficult part of my Whole30 was preparing non-compliant foods for him! Here are my tips for surviving a Whole30 with kids!READ MORE
2016 Gift Guide for Moms
I’m back today with another gift guide for you! This time its the 2016 Gift Guide for Moms and I’m focusing on the busy mommas that never slow down to do something for themselves. This list is everything that busy momma will want to feel pampered, relaxed, and loved this winter! (Hint, hint hubby).
- Nespresso Evoluo Machine I have this machine and I absolutely LOVE it! I’m a total coffee addict, so for me to start my day off right, I love to get up before anyone else in the house, make my latte (this makes just plain ole’ cups of coffee too!), and sit with my warm cup in peace. Even if just lasts five minutes. It’s probably the only five minutes of peace I’ll have all day.
- Skincare – I love to be spoiled with my two favorite brands of skin care that I really never buy for myself (Naturopathica and Eminence Organics. It seems like a lot to spend on me and I’d rather spend the money on the boys! But, when my husband gifts me either of these, I feel totally pampered every time I use them! My favorite line from Eminence is their Stone Crop line. My favorite product from Naturopathica is their Calendula Essential Hydrating Cream.
- Books – As part of my morning coffee routine, I love to read from a book that fills my cup and gets me ready for the day. My top two picks right now are Grace Not Perfection by Emily Ley and Pressing Pause: 100 Quiet Moments for Moms to Meet with Jesus.
- Matching pajamas. I don’t know why, but when I wake up in the morning with a cute set of matching pajamas on, I really feel like I’ve got my act together! Maybe because there’s a high likelihood that I will be in them for a couple hours after I wake up.
I’m loving these from J.Crew!
- Athleta’s Ponte Moto Pant. You guys, I’m living in these pants these days! They are so incredibly comfortable but look dressy and hold their shape all day! I have two pairs already and I realllllly want more. They go with absolutely everything – from sweaters to button down shirts, to tees! I also love the zipper detail!
- Athleta’s Totes Dorbs Deux bag. I have this bag and it goes everywhere with me. It’s big enough to fit diapers, my laptop, bottles, you name it! But not so big that I feel overwhelmed by it. It’s also super comfortable to wear! There’s also an adorable backpack version!
- Cozy plaid blanket from Pottery Barn. This is just so soft and cozy – a must have for those chilly mornings and evenings! I love to curl up on the couch and read at the end of the day with Noah and this is the perfect blanket to snuggle with!
- Emily Ley’s Simplified Daily Planner. This is an absolute must-have! This planner is beautiful, simple, and perfect for a busy mom. I love opening my planner each morning and seeing a well organized day.
- Hire a maid! I don’t think I know any mom that wouldn’t love a break from housework to do something relaxing! Have someone else clean the house once while she goes out to lunch with a friend or wanders aimlessly around target with a coffee.
- Spa Day – whether it’s getting her nails done, a massage, or a facial, every mom needs an hour to relax.
2016 Christmas Gift Giving Guide for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers
As organized as I am with a lot of things in life, gift giving is just not one of them! I prefer to give gifts that are special for each person – something that really made me think of that person when I saw it. So when I’m under pressure to get gifts by a certain date, I tend to procrastinate. This year, I’m really trying to be on the ball and get my Christmas shopping done early! One of my favorite ways to give gifts to little ones is by giving them a book and an experience or educational (but fun) toy to go with it. I love themed gifts as a way to make it fun for the littles! There really just isn’t anything better than a good book and great memories, right?! Here’s my 2016 Christmas gift giving guide for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers!
Baby Gift Box – Elephants
I just think this is such a sweet baby gift! The That’s Not My series is seriously so cute! My boys have loved these books. They are colorful and there’s a different texture on each page. Plus the story is repetitive and simple, so Noah can now read these books to Liam. Melts this momma’s heart!
Baby Gift Box – Tummy Time!
This is another adorable gift for any new baby! How cute is this?! An adorable ‘under the sea’ themed play mat and tummy time book!
Fold out tummy time books These are simply some of the coolest books for a baby! They fold out and stand up in front of baby! Baby can either be on their tummy or even sitting up. Liam loves looking at the high contrast pictures and Noah loves telling him what each picture is!
Baby Gift Box – Beginning Shapes
Toddler Gift Box – We’re Going to the Zoo!
Tickets to the Zoo
Toddler Gift Box – Learning Colors and Taking Turns
Taking turns is something we are working on, and the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel game gives us a fun way to practice! I love that when it’s your turn, you hold the squirrel. This provides the child a very concrete way of knowing whose turn it is. This game also targets learning colors! We get a lot of laughs out of this game! Noah gets very protective of his acorns!
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game
Toddler Gift Box – Exploring My World
My Very First Book About the World
Soft Globe (We have this soft globe at home and love it. It’s not only educational, but gives him something to hold while we read our books about the world. It also is great for learning to play catch! It’s soft enough that no one will get hurt and its squishy, so it’s easy for Noah to catch).
Preschool Gift Box – Secret Hide Out
There’s just something that is so much fun about having a secret hide out. We have a tee pee in Noah’s room with a basket of books right outside its door. He loves to go hide in there and read (sometimes I even get invited in!). Pair this with a secret flashlight book and I guarantee this is one gift your kids will love!
Teepee (I loooove the selection from Land of Nod!!)
Shine-a-light book (There are so many in this collection and they are all so much fun! Definitely a favorite in our house!). Give it with a flashlight to make it a complete gift.
Preschool Gift Box – Learn how to code! Yep, you read that right! How fun does this look?!
Look Inside How Computers Work
Preschool Gift Box – Natural History Experience
Tickets to local Natural History Museum
Preschool Gift Box – Snowy Day Rescue Kit
Zoo on the Loose is hands down our favorite game right now! It’s so fun and interactive. Best of all, it burns energy! We don’t always follow the rules exactly and modify it for when it’s just Noah and I playing, but nonetheless, we run around the house laughing while we play this game!

Top Ten Picks for Kids Fall Activities
Noah is being a wild and crazy two year old this week. It’s only Wednesday and he’s already worn me out! I’m sure some of you mommas out there know the feeling. Since there are still several days remaining in this week, I knew I had to find a way to channel all of his energy! Today I’m sharing my top ten picks for kids Fall activities from around the web!
- Paint Pumpkins! Our mini pumpkins were getting close to the point of needing to be thrown out, so I let Noah paint them. He had a great time and there was virtually no set up required. Pumpkins and paint – pretty simple!
- Stained Glass Pumpkin and Leaves – again a super simple activity! Cut pieces of tissue paper into squares and tape contact paper cut into the shape of a pumpkin or leaf to a window. This is so pretty when the light shines through! Of course, being a two year old boy, Noah had a great time throwing the tissue paper pieces into the air and watching them float down to the floor.
- Play Doh Turkeys – For this activity, I shaped play doh into a turkey and gave Noah a bowl of feathers. He had a great time making his turkey!
- Easy Marbled Fall Leaves – i heart arts and crafts
- Leaf Handprints – House of Burke
- Fall Bucket List for Toddlers – Busy Toddler (Love the pumpkin wash idea! Now I know what to do with the rest of my pumpkins)!
- Pumpkin Counting Cards – Life Over C’s (Noah would be totally on board with these, since they feature trucks)!
- Turkey Color Match – I Heart Crafty Things
- Autumn Sensory Writing Tray – The Imagination Tree (hands down, one of my absolute favorite sites)!!
- Fall Sensory Bin – Fantastic Fun and Learning
Here’s how my take on the Fall Sensory Bin turned out!
Creating a Gorgeous Fall Tablescape
I know I’ve said it at least a hundred times, bu Fall is my absolute favorite season! I just love the colors and scents of Fall, sweaters, boots, and of course, the amazing PSL (pumpkin spice latte)! I always look forward to decorating my home for Fall. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I thought I’d share with you a few tips for creating a gorgeous Fall tablescape.
A few years ago I built a wooden container to use as my Fall tablescape. I’ve continued to use that box ever since, just changing out the filler for it by season. I absolutely love it because it’s beautiful and versatile, yet low enough that it doesn’t block guests’ view of one another. This year, I wanted to dress it up a little. I recently attended a market here in Kansas City where I saw people using simple pieces of fabric as table runners. What a cool, easy way to add interest to your table!
Here’s how I built the wooden container. I don’t have pictures of the process because I built this box years ago, but I can show you the finished product!
I used:
3 boards 30″ x 3 1/2″
2 board pieces 3 1/2″ x 2 3/4″
I cut the boards to size and then used wood glue and a few nails on the edges to secure it. I then added upholstery nails to add a decorative and rustic touch. I stained the box a color that coordinated but didn’t exactly match my dining room table. (The box is a touch lighter). I also cut and stained a smaller piece of wood that fits down inside the box for those times where I want to elevate the contents inside.
To add something special to my tablescape for Fall, I picked up a gorgeous gray and white plaid fabric at Hobby Lobby. This really could not be any easier – just fold the fabric to the size you want and lay it on the table! Really, no sewing or taping!
I found gray toned wood chargers at World Market and knew they would be perfect under my Anthropologie white plates! I used napkins that I already had to add another layer on each place setting. I then used a chalky gray spray paint to dress up a few pears that I had used as a vase filler in the past. By setting the pears on top of each place setting, it really pulls the whole look together.
What’s your favorite way to decorate your table for Fall?
Truck Activities That Kids Will Love
Noah absolutely loves trucks. He spends most of the day either playing with trucks or reading books about trucks! I definitely take advantage of his love for trucks in order to keep him busy. Here are ten fun truck activities that kids will love!
Read books about trucks! We love the books by Usborne because they present facts about different types of trucks, have colorful pictures, and are fun! I’m always surprised how much Noah understands and remembers from these books, even though they are very detailed! Here are our favorite books about trucks!
Construction Sites (Don’t tell Noah he’s getting this one for Christmas!)
Shine-a-Light on the Construction Site
(If you’ve never seen the Shine-a-Light series from Usborne, you’ve really got to check them out! Flashlights + Books = Major Fun)!
Paint your own truck! I found this wooden truck at Michael’s for a couple dollars. We used Crayola Washable Paint. Noah spent about 15 minutes painting his truck a variety of colors! He was so excited for it to dry so that he could play with it!
Make truck pancakes! You can use a mold or even just a regular cookie cutter to make pancakes in a variety of shapes! I have a train cookie cutter and a truck mold that we use every time we make pancakes. Noah always eats a great breakfast when trucks or trains are involved. You could also do this with sandwiches.
Make a homemade construction site! This construction site was so much fun to create together, was free, and its been one of his favorite toys ever. I dug around my storage room for boxes and we got to work creating! We cut doors and windows in the boxes to make garages for the trucks. We used crumpled up paper bags for piles of dirt. We used an old bottle drying rack and a magnet attached with yarn to make a crane! Get creative and use what you have!
Make a truck sensory bin. Check out this post for ideas on how to make your own truck themed sensory bin.
Cotton ball painting with truck stencils. I picked up a truck stencil from Hobby Lobby (Noah’s favorite store…”Momma, are we going to Hobby Wobby?”). I clipped cotton balls onto the ends of clothespins, poured out some paint onto a plate, and let him paint!
Truck Wash. This is such an easy and fun sensory activity! Here’s the recipe I used to make the foam for our truck wash. He even had a great time making tracks on the table with his trucks.
Sticky Trucks. I found small foam truck shapes and signs at Hobby Lobby. I just put them in a bowl and taped a piece of contact paper to the table. Noah spent forever creating designs and moving his trucks around!
Truck Stamps. I also found trucks and cars stamps at Hobby Lobby. Noah had a great time stamping them with different colors of ink and then he decided to draw a road with his crayon. He was very proud of his creation.
Cookie cutter activities. Cookie cutters are one of the best tools to have on hand. There really is so much that you can do with them! Here’s a few things that we’ve done with our truck cookie cutters: make cookies, play doh, tracing with crayons, sand prints, and food shapes (pancakes, sandwiches).
How to Organize the Pantry
One of the areas that I’ve struggled with the most over the years is how to organize the pantry. No matter what system I’ve tried, it seems to become a complete mess within days of organizing it! I have no idea how it happens. After spending an embarrassing amount of time one afternoon searching for chocolate chips, only to realize I had TWELVE bags of them, I decided it was time for a major pantry overhaul! I apparently also needed to do some baking.
Really….twelve bags of chocolate chips.
Here’s a before picture of my pantry. Messy, I know. Now you understand why I couldn’t find anything.
An organization project like this can be overwhelming. Here are my top 3 tips for organizing and the 5 simple steps I used to tackle my pantry organization project. (Note: we did a home remodel in between the time I took the before/after pictures, so the cabinets are now white!).
3 Tips to Make Organizing a Success
- Only keep what you actually use or need.
- Give each item a specific home!
- Label. This allows other family members to understand your organization system.
5 Steps to an Organized Pantry
Step 1: Take everything out. And I mean EVERYTHING. As you take items out, sort them into piles. As you sort, check the expiration date on everything and toss out the old stuff. I usually sort into the following categories:
Items for baking (flour, sugar, cocoa powder, my twelve bags of chocolate chips, etc).
Breakfast (pancake mix, syrup, cereal, bread, oatmeal)
Canned goods, vinegars, and oils
Kid food (goldfish, crackers, rice cakes, squeezy pouches, fruit cups, juice boxes, milk boxes)
Pasta, rice, and sauces (pasta sauce, enchilada sauce, bbq sauce)
Step 2: Throw out or donate anything that you really won’t use. Be honest, that jar of dip that would be the ‘perfect party appetizer’ for the party you will never get around to having can probably go. Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.
Step 3: Find pretty containers to pour pantry items into (bags of flour, sugar, pancake mix, cereal, granola, baking powder, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, oats). I used glass containers from the Container Store. For things like flour, make sure the mouth of the jar is wide enough to get at least a 1 cup measuring cup in. I love being able to measure right out of my container!
Step 4: Label your containers. I love these labels. They are easy to put on the containers, easy to write on, and I think the chalkboard look is so cute! I’ve had these on for months now, and they look as great as they did when I first put them on!
Step 5: Put everything back in. Be sure to wipe down all of the shelves before you put everything back in! I have five pantry shelves, so my shelves are organized in the same order as the list above (baking, breakfast, canned goods, kid food, pasta).
Having everything labeled and specific shelves for like items has meant that we’ve actually been able to keep it organized! Really – it’s been about 7 months now and my pantry really, truly is still this organized. And with extremely minimal effort. Once in a while I check expiration dates, but I have not needed to do a major re-organization! You know me; a pretty, organized space makes for a happy momma! The best part is that Noah knows exactly which shelf is his! He is so proud of himself for being able to open the pantry and get out his own snack. I hear a lot of, “I do it, Momma!!!” He’s two.
How do you keep your pantry organized?
Decorating your Home for Fall
In keeping with the Fall theme this week (since you know how much I love Fall!), I thought I’d share a little about decorating your home for Fall. I like to keep my Fall decor really simple. Here are my tips for simple ways to add a splash of Fall into your home!
First, add small pops of color. In my kitchen, I already have a plant and sign on a wooden cutting board. To bring a little touch of Fall into the space, it’s as simple as just adding a bright orange pumpkin. It gives a little, subtle color. This pumpkin happens to be a plate and bowl, so it’s handy for Fall entertaining!
For my coffee table, I want something with a little color, but that has a low profile and won’t take up too much space. Oh, and it has to be kid-proof. Noah likes to play at the coffee table, so I don’t want to have to constantly move something up and out of his way. Here’s what I came up with for my coffee table!
To switch it up and add more color, I can easily sub in a live mum plant. Get creative and use something with your favorite Fall colors! Real pumpkins (white or orange) would also be beautiful. I originally had white pumpkins in this basket, but within minutes of Noah noticing them, I realized I would soon have smashed pumpkin all over my rug. Hence the stick pumpkins!
My second tip for decorating for the Fall season is to make it cozy! I love to put my favorite super soft blanket under the coffee table. It makes it look cozy and is always within reach from the couch for chilly nights! There’s really nothing better in the Fall than snuggling up with a hot drink and a cozy blanket!
My third tip for decorating for Fall is to keep it neutral….kind of. Using a neutral palette with just one pop of color makes for a clean look. For my fireplace mantle, I kept everything a cream tone and only used color in the leaves. It makes the leaves really pop and prevents the mantle from looking cluttered.
My fourth tip for decorating for Fall is swap out, don’t add! For every Fall decoration that you bring out, take something existing down. For example, the pumpkin in my kitchen replaced a white flowering plant that used to be in that spot. The centerpiece on my coffee table replaced the stack of magazines that had been there. I also did a simple pillow swap in the basket by the fireplace by putting in a pumpkin pillow.
Fall Sensory Activity
I absolutely love Fall. It’s definitely my favorite season of the year! So, it’s no surprise that I love coming up with fun Fall themed activities. Today I’m sharing a Fall sensory activity that we love every year! It’s so incredibly simple to create. I leave this basket out through the Fall season and it looks so pretty sitting in our playroom! Fall decoration and activity all in one – can’t beat that!
For our Fall sensory basket, I simply take Noah to a local pumpkin patch (or you could even pick these up at the grocery store!). I let him choose a variety of gourds and small pumpkins. I just make sure we get a variety of colors, textures, and shapes! Then, I just throw them in a basket when we get home and let him explore them.
Another really fun way to change this activity up a bit is to put the pumpkins and gourds on a mirrored surface. Just be sure it’s shatter proof for kiddos, as they will likely drop the pumpkins on the surface! This is a really fun way to talk about mirror images. They even get to see their own reflection as they play!
Here are a few other ideas for adding additional elements to your sensory basket for Fall:
- Help your children explore difference scents of Fall by adding spice containers to your basket. Pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves are a few that are great! I always supervise this activity to be sure Noah doesn’t spill or try to eat them.
- When you are getting close to the end of the season, paint your pumpkins and gourds!
- Cut them open. Let your kids explore the inside.
- Talk about the colors and shapes of the pumpkins and gourds. Talk about the texture of their surfaces (smooth, bumpy, ridges, etc).
- Encourage creative play. Noah likes to drive little trucks around and over them and make bridges with the tree block pieces to connect one pumpkin to another. You’ll be surprised what your kiddos can come up with!
- Use the pumpkins and gourds to make imprints in play doh.

Throw a Halloween Party
Every year I throw a Halloween party where we invite our friends and their kiddos to join us for food and pumpkin carving. Over the years, this party has grown, but it’s so much fun! I’ve gone from owning almost no Halloween decorations to owning quite a lot! I recently decorated the house in preparation for our party, so I thought I’d share a peek and my tips for a great party!
For the mantle, I wanted an elegant display with a little bit of “spook” to it. I went with a black and white theme to keep it clean and simple. It all started with the black and white leaves. I found those at Michael’s and the rest of the design evolved from there! To add something special to the vase and candles that I already had, I just cut pieces of black lace and used double sided tape to secure them.
For the dining room table, I used trees from Target’s dollar bin as my centerpiece. I added a black lace spider web table runner under the wooden box that is my centerpiece mainstay. To bring some of the same elements into my tablescape, I draped pieces of black lace over the plates. I then cut 2 pieces off of a spider web banner and used those with a little ghost in order to make the two end place settings a little different.
In terms of the actual party, here are a few tips to make it go off without a hitch!
First, plan and prep ahead! My party isn’t for two more weeks, but I’ve already got the decorations up. By using decorations that are elegant and simple, I don’t mind having them up for a while to enjoy before Halloween! I’ve got the menu planned out as well. It’s the same every year and I can make it ahead! Here’s the menu that I typically serve. Everything gets made the day before and all I have to do on the day of the party is reheat the soup in crockpots!
Pumpkin Fluff with Vanilla Wafers
Chili
Chicken Tortilla Soup
Cornbread
Meat, cheese, cracker tray (with everything cut up small enough for toddlers)
Fruit (again, cut up ahead of time to be small enough for toddlers)
Cupcakes
Second, plan entertainment for the kids so that the adults can enjoy each other (or at least try)! This year, I found some masks at Michael’s that the kids can color. I plan to set out the masks with washable crayons and construction paper with Halloween stickers.
Third, offer pumpkin carving! What would a party with kids be without a good mess?! If the weather is nice, we’ll do this outside on kid tables. If not, I’ve got plastic tablecloths that I can put down on the floor. Our party is always BYOP – Bring Your Own Pumpkin! I provide stickers for the kids to decorate their pumpkins with (hello Target dollar bin) as well as carving tools. In the past, the kids have loved putting stickers all over their pumpkins and it keeps them busy!
